Dr. Andrew Toledo given prestigious RESOLVE 2009 Hope Award for Advocacy
Dr. Andrew Toledo, medical director of Reproductive Biology Associates, was awarded the RESOLVE 2009 Hope Award for Advocacy at the Tavern on the Green in New York City on June 2nd, 2009.
This award is given to an individual and/or organization or corporation whose work has raised public awareness, advanced a legislative agenda, or prompted change for the benefit of those diagnosed with infertility.
Dr. Toledo was chosen for his years of commitment to supporting access to care for infertility patients both in Georgia and throughout the United States. He has treated infertile couples in the Atlanta area for over twenty years, and has a vested interest in protecting patients' rights and fighting for mandated insurance coverage for infertility treatment.
In March of this year, Toledo, the legislative chair of the Georgia OB/GYN Society, speared efforts to raise public awareness about infertility by publically lobbying against Senate Bill 169. This bill sought to regulate the number of embryos transferred during IVF, among other issues. With the help of other Georgia infertility centers, patients and support groups, the bill was defeated. This issue was also a very personal one for Dr. Toledo, since he and his wife had to go through multiple attempts at IVF before they successfully achieved a pregnancy. This legislation would have negatively affected their treatment.
Dr. Toledo and RBA have always supported RESOLVE in their efforts to help infertile couples. Most recently, RBA sponsored four patients for Advocacy Day, thus allowing them to attend this event on June 25th in Washington, D.C. to represent Georgia. This day focused on educating the House of Representatives on the disease of infertility and a variety of issues relating to the Family Building Act of 2009 and the Adoption Tax Credit.
